Mummified Times Five: 101 Things - #53 Glory Box List

  • Chris · 1 year ago
Yes my parents bought me one for my 18th and I still have it in my bedroom now. I know they spent quite a lot of money buying it and am hoping it is something I can give to my god-daughter when she is old enough (I dont have any kids of my own).

I used to love buying stuff for my glory box and used to buy just about anything I came across on special. My glory box turned into a glory shed as it wouldnt all fit in the box.

    What about:
    Salt & pepper shakers
    Tea/coffee/sugar canisters
    Pegs & peg basket
    Caserole dish
    Sundae glasses/ice cream scoop
    Funky apron
Tea towels - you can never have to many of those
    Recipe books

Geez I could go all night... haha

wow, I think you've got a pretty comprehensive list going! I always wanted a glory box - my girl friend had an absolutely lovely cedar chest. But I never did get an actual box ... although I did have quite a bit of stuff collected for one.

My Mom did something similar to this for me. She called it a Hope Chest though. I loved it and still have it, though the items are now being used.

I've got my grandma's old cedar chest, but I got it after I'd been married several years. I keep my sweaters in it.

Hi, just dropping ecards, but read your list of items for your daughter's glory box...WOW, I think you're going to need a bigger box!
  • Tina Gray (mummifiedx5) · 1 year ago
I think you may be right! :)

I always wondered what that Portishead song "Glorybox" was about:)

I used to have my grandmother's cedar chest in my bedroom. I love the idea of a hope chest--I do think you should put something together for your son. If you are worried about it being too feminine, what if you used an old steamer trunk or metal locker instead? Or you could even be more practical than that and use a big Rubbermaid container. As far as what goes inside--I would definitely include a small tool kit (for daughter and son). That was something my parent's made sure I had before I went to college and it saved me many a time. :)

That's a great idea, Laura :) And a tool kit is definitely a must!

I always wanted a hope chest when I was younger. I think having one for you son is a good idea. What about adding something semimetal? A letter from you? Something he made when he was young?
  • Tina Gray (mummifiedx5) · 1 year ago
I didn't think of that, Paula :) Thanks!

I'll be giving the boys something like a glory box when they move out. But to make it manly I'll probably go with those steel truck bed style boxes and call it a 'tools box". My husband considers our kitchen aid stand mixer a power tool. It's all in how you spin it. :)

What a great idea!! I never had any kind of glory box or memory box...I was so deprived...LOL! But I like your idea and I'd love to do something like that for my kids! As it is I've started memory boxes for them with things from their babyhood, like hair from 1st haircut, hospital bands, outfits they wore when they came home from the NICU.

I have my grandmother's cedar chest at the end of my bed. I've had it as long as I can remember as she died before I turned 2 from cancer. I use mine to store meaningful items, such as items from my grandmother and family memories. How about maybe adding some family photos in your daughter's chest?

I didn't have one, but I think it's a great idea. I would like to do this for my daughter some day. I think a set of really nice, high quality sheets would be a great addition.

When my fiance turned 21 his mum gave him a chest (it was sort of a really hard cardboard material) and in it were school certificates, his first teddy, things for the year he was born like a commemorative poon & coin etc, his baby book and things like that. It was really nice.
Since then he always makes me buy a baby coin set from the post office when a friend has a baby so I think he was really touched by the chest and what was in it.

That's sweet that it's so memorable for your fiance, Chris :) I keep all
that sort of stuff too as well as putting together a scrapbook for each of
the kids that will be given to them when they move out.....

I had a glory box and collected from about age 15. When my mum gave me the box (camphor chest) she had a tupperware party and all guests bought me something - and with the lifetime warranty I have been using mine for years and years.

No, don't give a boy a glory box! My mum decided to start making one up for my brother when he was about 25 and still no sign of leaving home. My husband still jokes about his BIL's glory box.

I can just see that our boy won't move out. He's the only one that has his
own room. The girls all share a room.

I would add family recipes that she may want.
